Penistone Paramount Cinema

Penistone Paramount Cinema

The Penistone Paramount Cinema is a community cinema and theatre located in Penistone, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Besides the big film releases, there are also live shows and monthly organ concerts. The cinema is home to one of the few working theatre organs in the country.

Penistone Paramount Cinema Overview

The Paramount Compton Organ was originally built in 1937 and has been recently rebuilt. The building is owned by the local council and is leased back to the town council to keep it open as a cinema. It has been featured on the BBC as an example of how a small provincial community cinema can survive.

The cinema first opened as the Assembly Hall in 1944. Today there is a single screen with 344 seats. Behind their large screen is a large stage from which they present their live events. The auditorium was refurbished in 2020. There is a bar and they serve a good range of cinema-related treats.
