Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre

Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre

The Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre are located near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. This is a unique spot in the heart of the Pennine countryside, and Standedge Tunnel is the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in Britain. It offers a mix of history, canalside scenery and family‑friendly activities. Located on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the tunnel stretches an incredible 3.5 miles beneath the Pennines. It’s an impressive sight even before you step inside, and the surrounding visitor centre makes it a great day out for families.

Outside, the canalside setting is perfect for a relaxed wander. Families can enjoy the play area, picnic tables and plenty of open space to run around. The towpath is ideal for a short walk, with boats passing through and lovely views across the Marsden countryside. The Watersedge Café offers drinks, cakes and light bites, and there’s seating both indoors and outdoors.

For those wanting to experience the tunnel itself, boat trips are available for an additional cost. These guided journeys take you partway into the tunnel, giving you a real sense of its scale and atmosphere while learning about its history from the onboard guide. Longer, full‑length passage trips run on select dates and must be booked in advance.
