Warkworth Castle

Warkworth Castle is located in Warkworth near Morpeth in Northumberland. It is a ruined medieval castle maintained by English Heritage. It was built sometime in the 12th century, originally in timber and was later strengthened. The design is irregular with the keep at the north end overlooking the town and the bailey to the south.

What is there to do at Warkworth Castle?

The castle was once occupied by the powerful Dukes of Northumberland, the Percy family. You can learn more about the family and explore the floors and rooms in the cross-shaped keep. The keep was once home to ‘Harry Hotspur’ who was immortalised as a rebel lord by Shakespeare, he was also the bane of Scottish raiders who often tried to besiege the castle.

Warkworth Castle benefits from some spectacular river and coastal views from the castle walls. The towers at the castle are nearly intact and provide some of the best views. In the castle keep you can see the Duke’s rooms which will give you a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle that the inhabitants once enjoyed. There is a free, audio tour that you can pick up and take around with you so you can learn even more about the castle.

You can extend your visit by taking a walk half a mile upriver and then taking a boat trip across the river to discover the Hermitage. This is a religious building carved out of the rock. The Hermitage is open on certain days. The castle hosts a number of family-friendly events,. You can also pick up special activity packs for kids to help them get even more out of their visit.

There is a vending machine selling hot drinks, some snacks are available in the shop. You are welcome to bring a picnic.

Large part ruined castle with a keep, rooms you can explore, a Hermitage (open on certain days), kids activity sheets and more. There are toilets, hot drinks and limited snacks.

What are the ticket prices?

Free for members of English Heritage. An adult ticket costs £7.90 without donation, children 5-17 £4.70. Other pricing options including family tickets are available.
Prices are subject to change and/or discounts online.

Is there parking?

There is parking for about 48 cars at the castle and additional parking in the village.

When are they open?

Warkworth Castle is open for most of the year with some closure mid-week during autumn and winter. For up-to-date opening times and dates please visit their website.
