Lullingstone Roman Villa

Lullingstone Roman Villa

Lullingstone Roman Villa is an English Heritage-maintained site in Eynsford, Kent. It was built during the Roman occupation of Britain around 80-90 CE. The house was destroyed by fire in the 4th or 5th century. The ruins were later incorporated into a Christian chapel.

The site has some of the most outstanding Roman villa survivals in Britain and as the ruins are undercover it is great to visit in all-weathers. Visitors can still view the spectacular mosaics which are beautifully preserved examples and are some of the most impressive mosaics in England. Plus there is a heated bath suite and a ‘house-church’. This is the remains of an early site of Christian worship. A wall painting from this period survives here and can still be seen today.

The building has a specially commissioned light show that brings the village to life. The film and light show light-up areas of the remains as the film reveals how they were once used. There are Roman board games you can try, you can handle original building materials and try on Roman costumes. There are some incredible finds on view that were found during the excavations of Lullingstone. If you are feeling energetic visitors can enjoy the ‘Lullingstone Loop walk’ which is a local footpath route.
