Things to do at Lanercost Priory

The priory is set in a tranquil location and stands close to Hadrian’s Wall. It suffered many attacks during the Anglo-Scottish wars including an attack with Robert the Bruce in person. There is still much to see and the east end of the 13th-century church survives to full height. There are a few, free, to visit, English Heritage maintained parts of Hadrian’s wall that you can also visit in the local area.

As well as ruins that you can explore there are tombs of patrons of Lanercost including Randolf, the first Dacre and an ornate tomb of Sir Humphrey Dacre. The site was once the Tudor mansion of the Dacre family and you can see parts of this on your visit.

On the walls of the priory, you can spot several pieces of Roman inscription. This is because the medieval masons chose them because they were useful for building the priory with. There is also an undercroft that contains replicas of Roman altars and tombstones that have been found nearby over the last 200 years.
