Farleigh Hungerford Castle

Farleigh Hungerford Castle is a picturesque ruined castle set in a valley of the River Frome just a few miles drive from Bath in Somerset. The first stage of the castle was built in the late 14th century with the second phase later after that. It survived major damage during the English Civil War although the site is today largely ruined.
What is there to do at Farleigh Hungerford Castle?
The castle was occupied for 300 years by the Hungerford family and their sometimes gruesome stories are told through graphic panels and a free, audio tour. There are many hidden treasures including a chapel with rare medieval wall paintings and family tombs. If you are brave enough to go into the crypt you will find in there the best collection of human-shaped lead coffins in Britain. These still contain the embalmed remains of four men, two women and two children thought to be members of the Hungerford family. Try and spot the faces moulded onto them.
In the Priest’s house, you can see an exhibition detailing the history of the castle with displays of Hungerford armour, a model of the castle and finds from the castle. There are also two towers that you can explore and extensive grounds laid to grass including a walled garden. There are child-friendly activities dotted around the site and activity sheets during special events and school holidays.
