Aydon Castle

Aydon Castle

Aydon Castle is a fortified manor house near the town of Corbridge in Northumberland. The property is maintained by English Heritage and it is a grade 1 building. The original manor house was first constructed around the late 13th century. The house was later fortified around 1311 as a defence against the Scottish. It was later captured and virtually destroyed by the Scots. Luckily it was later rebuilt and it was later operated as a farmhouse.

Its life as a farmhouse ended in 1966 when it was opened to the public as a historic site. It is considered today as an excellent example of a fortified manor house. The house is set in beautiful and secluded woodland and it’s a great place to bring a picnic and spend some time exploring.

During your visit, you can explore the well-fortified manor house plus the woodland surroundings. Inside the house, there are original medieval carved fireplaces that date back to around the 13th century. If you don’t mind heights you can even walk out on the battlements. There is also a walled orchard which is a great spot for a picnic. There is plenty of grass for children to run around and ball games are permitted.
