Palace of Holyroodhouse

Palace of Holyroodhouse

Owned by His Majesty the King is the 16th-century Palace of Holyroodhouse. It is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland and it is located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, at the opposite end of Edinburgh Castle. Queen Elizabeth II spends one week here at the beginning of every summer.

At the Palace, you can explore the close associations with some of Scotland’s most well-known historical figures such as Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie. There are state apartments that you can look around including the King’s Bedchamber the grandest of all the rooms. Other rooms include the Royal dining room, throne room, Mary, Queen of Scots chambers and more.

Standing next to the Palace is Holyrood Abbey which was once one of the grandest medieval abbeys in Scotland. The Palace wardens conduct daily tours of the abbey where you can learn more about its history. There are also beautiful 4-hectare palace gardens that you can visit.
