Glamis Castle
Glamis Castle is a house near Forfar in Angus, Scotland. It is home of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghome and the house is open to the public. It was first built in the 14th century although most of the present building dates from the 17th century. The house was the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and it was the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and the birthplace of HRH Princess Margaret.
The house is set in extensive gardens that change throughout the seasons. There is a walled garden including a fun grass maze and Monet-style fountains. An Italian garden that was designed by the Queen Mother’s mother. Near the Italian garden, there is a nature trail where there have been sightings of red squirrels, herons, roe deer and pheasants. There is also a Macbeth trail with sculptures made out of wood, each capturing iconic scenes from the famous play.
In the house, you can enjoy a guided tour and find out more about its history. Kids will love to hear about the spooky ghost stories (that are as child-friendly as possible). There are also exhibition rooms and a family exhibition room at the end of the tour. Glamis Castle hosts a number of annual events. There is also a play area with a zip wire, swings and a tunnel.
