Skipton Castle

Skipton Castle

Skipton Castle is a medieval castle and it is one of the most complete and well-preserved castles in Britain. It was built in 1090 by Robert De Romile who was a Norman Baron.

What is there to do at Skipton Castle?

Visitors can explore every corner of the castle which withstood a 3-year siege during the English Civil War. You can look round the Banqueting Hall, the kitchen, bed chamber and privy. You can even go down into the dungeons or climb to the top storey of the watchtower. The castle holds some great annual events, including battle reenactments.

People usually extend their visit by exploring the local Skipton Woods maintained by the Woodland Trust. The woods are a rare ancient woodland habitat found straight off the high street. It is a haven for wildlife so why not take some binoculars and see what you can spot? You can even join in with a modern version of a treasure hunt to find six hidden boxes named after the people who lived and worked around Skipton Castle Woods. Each box contains a notepad for you to leave a message and an ink pad so you can mark your stamp sheet. (trails available on their website)
