Ingleton Waterfalls Trail

Ingleton Waterfalls Trail

The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is one of North Yorkshire’s most spectacular walking routes, offering a mix of dramatic scenery, peaceful woodland and some of the finest waterfalls in the region. The circular trail is around 4.3 miles long and begins in the village of Ingleton, where you follow a well‑maintained footpath that winds through two beautiful river gorges. From the moment you set off, the sound of rushing water follows you, building anticipation for the views ahead.

The path takes you close to the edge of the Rivers Twiss and Doe, giving you constant glimpses of cascades, rapids and smaller falls as you make your way along the route. The trail includes a number of steep sections and many steps, so sturdy footwear is essential, but the effort is rewarded with uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. Although the path is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs, it is one of the most accessible waterfall walks in the area, with clear signage and a well‑defined route.

The highlight of the walk is Thornton Force, a powerful waterfall that plunges over a limestone cliff and is widely regarded as one of Yorkshire’s most impressive natural sights. It’s a popular spot for photos and a perfect place to pause and take in the scale of the landscape. Further along the trail, you’ll encounter more waterfalls, woodland stretches and open countryside before looping back towards the village.

Most visitors complete the walk in two to four hours, depending on how often they stop to enjoy the views. With its mix of dramatic geology, peaceful riverside paths and unforgettable waterfalls, the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is a truly memorable day out for families, walkers and anyone who loves exploring the outdoors. It took us four hours to complete the route. We took it slowly and had a lot of stops, so we made it more of a day out. It’s a long walk, and it’s pretty steep at times.
