The Jacobite Steam Train West Coast Railways

The Jacobite Steam Train West Coast Railways

The Jacobite Steam Train is also known as The Harry Potter train, which follows the same journey as Harry Potter. It is a heritage railway running between Fort William and Mallaig in Inverness-shire, Scotland. The return journey takes around 4 hours, so if you want to visit anywhere along the way, please plan your day carefully.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing the real‑life Hogwarts Express steaming across that famous viaduct, the Jacobite Steam Train in the Scottish Highlands is one of the most magical family experiences you can have. This iconic journey runs from Fort William to Mallaig, covering an 84‑mile round trip through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK.

The route begins near Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, and winds past lochs, tiny villages and dramatic Highland landscapes. It’s often described as one of the greatest railway journeys in the world. The train crosses the 21‑arched Glenfinnan Viaduct, instantly recognisable from the Harry Potter films. West Coast Railways, who operate the Jacobite, even provided the steam engine and some of the carriages used in the movies. Time permitting, the train may pause on the viaduct so you can soak in the views over Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Monument, a truly unforgettable sight.
