WWT Martin Mere

WWT Martin Mere

WWT Martin Mere is a Wetland centre in Burscough, Lancashire. The nature reserve has a large wildfowl collection which is managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. It is 6 miles from Ormskirk and 10 miles from Southport. In 1985 the site was designated as a world heritage site.

The centre is a great place to stretch your legs and explore nature. You can expect to see geese, plenty of wild birds, flamingos and hopefully otters. There is a relatively new outdoor play area with zip wires, things to climb on and more. It’s a huge adventure playground for ages 3 to 12. Look out for the stepping stones over the water. They often have family-friendly adventure trails so it’s worth asking before you set out walking. There are a number of walks and trails.

Another fun activity is their canoe safari and boat tours. The self-guided canoe safari costs £9 for one hour and you can seat up to 3 people. Children must be 5 years old and at least 95 cm in height. It is a great way to explore the wetland and see areas not accessible on foot.
