Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle is a beautiful moated castle maintained by the National Trust in Bodiam, East Sussex. The 14th-century castle is set in the heart of a historic landscape. The castle was built between 1385 and 1388 by Sir Edward Dallingridge who came from a family of local landowners.

What is there to do at Bodiam Castle?

The castle has spiral staircases, battlements and a portcullis. It is one of Britain’s most picturesque and romantic ancient monuments. It takes around an hour to explore the castle. With its massive towers and broad moat, children will love exploring and imagining themselves as a bold knight or a genteel princess. There is plenty to spot and explore including murder holes, staircases to climb and great views across the Rother Valley.

There are some ducks on the moat which you can feed if you bring some bird-friendly food. You may even spot some of the moats’ large fish. The National Trust website usually has a family-friendly trail you can print out. There is also an interactive audio adventure available from the reception area. Why not combine your visit with a trip on the Kent and East Sussex railway or a cruise on the River Rother?

The castle is now a ruin but there’s still plenty to explore. There are special events, during school holidays with archery lessons and falconry walks (there is a small charge for both). They often have people in medieval costumes who are happy to show you different crafts.
