Foremark Reservoir

Foremark Reservoir is in south Derbyshire and is now managed by the National Trust. It is also a 230-acre nature reserve which is open to the public. Set in the peaceful South Derbyshire countryside, it’s a lovely spot for slow walks, wildlife watching, and simply getting some fresh air. The reservoir itself is surrounded by woodland and open space, giving you plenty of room to wander, whether you’re visiting with family, friends or just fancy a quiet solo stroll.

There’s a good network of paths around the water, ranging from easy, flat routes to slightly longer loops that take you deeper into the trees. It’s the kind of place where you can take things at your own pace, stop to watch the birds, skim stones, or just sit and enjoy the view across the water. On warmer days, the picnic areas are ideal for a relaxed lunch, and there’s usually an ice‑cream van or small kiosk open during busier times.

Foremark is also home to plenty of wildlife, so keep an eye out for woodland birds, butterflies and the occasional deer. If you’re visiting with kids, the open spaces are great for running around, and the shoreline offers lots of little nooks to explore. There are no set walking routes at the reservoir, but there are a variety of trails through woodland, alongside the reservoir and to Carver’s rocks. Foremark is home to Burton Sailing Club, which offers a range of activities for beginners and the experienced. These include windsurfing, offshore sailing and more. The reservoir has a play area for the kids.

The reservoir is free to visit if arriving on foot. There is a charge to park for non-members of the National Trust.

Is there parking?

Car parking is £3.50 for 4 hours or £5.00 all day. Parking is free for members of the National Trust.

When are they open?

Foremark Reservoir is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For up-to-date opening times and dates, please visit their website.

Dog friendly?

Dogs are welcome to explore Foremark but must be on a lead around the car parks, visitor facilities and picnic benches.

Are they accessible?

The multi-use Bridleway is wheelchair and mobility scooter friendly, offering views of woodland, farmland and across the reservoir along a 2.5km compacted stone path. Please note that this is a linear route. The dam view trail is also accessible, with a tarmac surface and gentle slopes.
