Muncaster Castle and Gardens

As well as being a great place to visit with the family you can also stay over at Muncastle Castle in Cumbria. Visitors can explore the castle and gardens plus there is a hawk and owl centre.

Things to do at Muncaster Castle and Gardens

The castle itself is believed to be standing on Roman remains. A castle was built in the late 13th century and extended and improved. The castle we see today was built in 1885. As well as being a hotel they also host weddings and visitors can also look around parts of the castle. There are some sumptuous state rooms to see and you can pick up an audio tour which takes around 40 minutes.

The gardens are around 77 acres with a blend of cultivated areas, lawns and woodland. Plus there is a play area and enchanted trail for children. The wood playground has a range of equipment to climb, swing and slide on. There is a large lawned area next to it with plenty of space to run around and picnic tables. The Enchanted Trail winds amongst the trees through some of Muncaster’s hidden corners. It is aimed at our smaller visitors with woodland dens to explore, stepping stones to play on and fairy doors to look out for.

The Meadowvole Maze is in the heart of Muncaster’s gardens and again is for the younger visitors. Here, where the grass is seven feet tall, you’ll find out what life is like for these tiny creatures. You’ll also meet Max MeadowVole who needs help to get home safely. So answer the questions, follow the path and guide him back. This is not a true maze where you can get lost. Designed for the young at heart it is indoors with areas of darkness which children under 5 may find frightening, so they recommend close adult supervision.

The Hawk and Owl Centre is within the gardens of Muncaster Castle and is open daily from Easter to early November and at weekends Nov-Dec & Feb-Easter. The Centre and the flying displays are included in your ticket.

There is a tea room and a cafe serving hot and cold food and drinks. There are outdoor picnic tables.

It is cheaper to purchase your tickets online in advance. An adult ticket online costs £6.80 for the gardens and bird centre and children are £3.66. A castle tour adult ticket is £14, children £7. Other pricing options are available.
