Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, is the perfect day out for all ages. It’s a beautiful castle that is lived in to this day but has a section open to the public as well as extensive well-kept gardens that can be explored.

What is there to do at Sudeley Castle?

Outdoors are 10 beautiful gardens, originally created in the 15th century, full of colourful flowers and pruned bushes. There’s a large wooden adventure playground for the children with a huge wooden fort and obstacle course.  ‘Lost in the Willow’ is a living willow maze full of tunnels for the children to run through. Various wooden and metal sculptures are dotted around the gardens to keep the children entertained.

The castles are set in the luscious rolling hills of the Cotswolds with much natural wildlife around, but the castle also has some animal attractions of its own. The pheasantry contains many endangered and rare species of pheasant, the ponds are filled with huge koi carp and there are peacocks freely roaming the ground. The castle hosts a number of events, throughout the year such as classic car rallies, nature trails, murder mysteries and their outstanding festive light show ‘Spectacle of Light’ which I highly recommend.

Inside the castle see the original 15th-century west wing, the east wing and the exhibition rooms which are open to the public. View a library, a bedroom and dressing room as they were. Learn more about the famous royal residents who have lived in the castle and view historical artefacts. The castle was once the royal residence of King Henry VIII and later home to his sixth wife Katherine Parr who is buried in its chapel.
