Bournemouth’s aquarium, the Oceanarium is located down by the sea and next to the pier. We spent a few hours there so it’s not a full day out but you can certainly spend over two hours there.

The aquarium is on two levels and flows well so you are unlikely to miss anything. They have daily feeding times and talks so make sure you pick up a schedule when you arrive. Each tank is labelled well and there’s plenty to look at.

They have over 150 species of fish plus penguins, otters, crocodiles, reptiles and turtles. There are even some sharks! You can actually sit and watch their Humboldt penguins from their cafe which is a nice touch. There is a large great barrier reef tank which can be seen from two floors which gives it a different perspective. This is where the sharks and turtle live and there’s also a tunnel through the tank. The turtles are huge!

At the end of your visit, you will find a small play area for children under 10 years. The children can play while you watch the penguins and jellyfish. There is also a small kiosk here selling drinks and snacks. The shark and turtle tank has been recently renovated/upgraded. Experiences are also available.

Is there food and drink available?

There is a cafe on-site, which overlooks the penguins, which sells hot and cold food and drinks. Plus, there is a small kiosk in the play area.

What are the main things to do?

Lots of tanks with different kinds of fish. Plus penguins, otters, sharks, turtles, reptiles, crocodiles and more. Small play area. There are toilets, a cafe and a small kiosk.

What are the ticket prices?

Make sure you purchase your tickets online in advance or you will have to pay more on the door. Online an adult ticket is £12.95 and £8.95 for a child. Under 3’s are free.
