No regrets! We left rural Lincolnshire and moved to a busy seaside town in Yorkshire. We love it here and we especially love exploring all the wonderful villages and towns on the coastline. When you think of picturesque seaside towns Cornwall will usually be your first thought.
It doesn’t need to be as Yorkshire has some of the most beautiful seaside towns and villages that we have ever seen. In this post, I will share with you our most favourite villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast.

Robin Hoods Bay
The drive to this popular cliffside seaside village is equally spectacular as the village itself. As a visitor to Robin Hoods Bay, you have to park at the top of the cliff and walk down through the narrow streets. There are some lovely shops to look in along the way and pubs to stop at for some food to eat.
Plus a small museum and a few interactive exhibits in the Old Coastguard station. There’s a good choice of hotels in the Robin Hood’s Bay area.
Staithes
Have you ever seen the CBeebies program ‘Salty Dog and Me’ with Bernard Cribbins? This was set in Staithes. It is similar to Robin Hood’s Bay, especially in that it is set on a cliff. The walk down isn’t quite as steep but it is equally rewarding. Staithes is small but at the same time, it has one of the largest fishing ports on the northeast coast. It also has a great beach for rock pooling and fossil hunting. There are two hotels in Staithes and a few just a short drive away.
Runswick Bay
The picturesque seaside village at Runswick Bay might be small but the beach and the bay it is in are anything but. When the tide is out there is a huge expanse of beautiful golden sand and over by the base of the cliffs, you may be lucky enough to find a fossil. There is a pay-and-display car park just a short walk from the beach. The only facilities were a couple of hotels and what looked like a small surf school.
Whitby
Whitby is a large seaside town and the biggest place to visit on my list. There’s so much to do, including the historical Whitby Abbey where Bram Stoker found inspiration for ‘Dracula’. There is a lot of history surrounding Captain Cook who lived in Whitby in his youth.
You can look around the Bark Endeavour that sits in the harbour. They even have a boat that goes out to sea. Whitby has a small museum, amusements and an abundance of restaurants, pubs, cafes and hotels.
Filey
Filey is home to many large caravan parks but it also has around 3 hotels and quite a few guesthouses. We love the long promenade at Filey. At one end you will find a large park high up on the cliff edge with a cafe down below. A little further along they have a small paddling pool.
Then a bit further on from here, there is crazy golf and then a few seasonal rides, the lifeboat station and a couple of amusement arcades. Our favourite thing to do at Filey is to visit at high tide as the sea usually comes over the sea wall.
Saltburn By The Sea
We visited this pretty seaside town for the first time just last weekend. It is a lovely place to visit. There are lots of wonderful restaurants up on the clifftop and when it’s running you can take the recently restored Victorian lift down to the only surviving pleasure pier on the Yorkshire coast.
The beach itself is stunning with a cliff on one side and the town on the other. There is a good choice of hotels and other accommodation available.
