If you want a truly unique holiday that will leave you and your family with life-long memories, there are few better options than an adventure in the Arctic.

Encompassing eight different countries, the Arctic Circle boasts magnificent fjords, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets and a wealth of fascinating and unusual flora and fauna. With so much to experience, going on an adventure in the Arctic is guaranteed to be unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

Here are just some of the reasons why you should consider a family adventure in the Arctic.

The Northern Lights

Also known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. The Northern Lights can be seen from a few different Scandinavian countries, and each of them holds special celebrations to mark the event. In Norway for example, the annual Northern Lights Festival features outdoor festivities and live music to celebrate this natural wonder.

A Northern Lights holiday to Norway will give you and your family the chance to witness this incredible event firsthand, giving you a truly special experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Unique wildlife

The Arctic Circle is home to dozens of unique animal species, all of which have evolved to live in one of the most challenging environments on the planet. From polar bears, reindeer and arctic foxes on land to beluga whales, narwhals and ringed seals on the water, a trip to the Arctic is a chance to see some of the most beautiful species in the world, many of which can’t be found anywhere else.

Remoteness

The Arctic is one of the most remote regions on the planet. Small pockets of humanity can be found, but for the most part, this region is made up of stunning natural scenery, ice caps, mountains and glaciers. If you’re looking for a peaceful experience that will let you feel closer to your loved ones, the Arctic is the perfect holiday destination.

Exciting activities and adventure

The Arctic can be a very peaceful place, but if you’re looking for thrilling activities for you and your family to enjoy, then you won’t be disappointed. Much of the Arctic is covered in snow, so skiing, dog sledging and snowmobiling are readily available. When the ice melts, you can also enjoy kayaking on the beautiful blue waters, and you can even go snorkelling or scuba-diving.

You can also take in the sounds and sights on a sailing tour or capture some mesmerizing images on an Arctic Photography Tour. If you’re looking for a place where you can leave your comfort zone, the Arctic is the perfect destination for you.

Traditional culture

The Inuit are a group of culturally similar indigenous peoples inhabiting various regions in the Arctic, including Greenland, Quebec and Alaska. You can experience traditional Inuit culture by visiting one of the many places where the Inuit make their living, including Ittoqqortoormiit, the most isolated town in Greenland with a population of just 450 people.

What you should know about visiting the Arctic

A family holiday in the Arctic can be a truly memorable experience, but to have the best time, there are some things worth knowing beforehand. Below are some tips that will help you enjoy the perfect Arctic adventure.

When is the best time to visit the Arctic?

The best time to visit varies based on what you want to do. If you want to see the Northern Lights, the best time to visit would be between September and April, with the lights visible between 5 pm and 2 am.

Mid-July to mid-August is the best time to travel between the islands, as the channels are less likely to be blocked by ice. In Norway, the midnight sun can be viewed from May until July.

What should you bring with you to the Arctic?

No matter what time of year you visit the Arctic, it’s essential that you pack warm clothing for everyone.

It’s a good idea to wear three layers during your trip: a base layer (a thermal or compression vest and leggings), a middle layer (a fleece or a sweater) and an outer layer (a big jacket or parka). Thick socks, hats and gloves and sunglasses are a must as well.

An adventure in the Arctic will certainly be different from the usual family vacation, but it provides an experience that you won’t find anywhere else and will leave you and your loved ones with cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
