We love to eat out and it seemed like a logical idea to start writing about great places to eat with your kids. I am starting with our favourite place to eat out – The North Star Inn in Flamborough on the East Yorkshire coast.
North Star Flamborough Review
We eat here as the staff are lovely and for us, they win the friendliest restaurant in the Bridlington/Flamborough area award. They are always so welcoming and they always make an extra effort to talk to our son and engage with him.
The North Star Inn is an award-winning restaurant and it is a great place to eat if you are staying at Haven’s Thornwick Bay Holiday Park. It is walkable or you can drive. They have a large car park and we’ve never struggled to find a space. It is also a great place to eat before or after a visit to Thornwick Bay Beach or the North Landing in Flamborough, both are just a short distance away.
To us, The North Star Inn harks back to the 1970s with a cosy feeling indoors and old classics such as prawn cocktail and there’s even a dessert trolley. But don’t think of that as a bad thing, for us we love that about the place and we’d be sad if it changed.
Booking is always advisable as they are a popular restaurant to eat at. They are also a hotel and they have been a hostelry since 1840. They have 9 rooms and they look lovely and comfortable, they are also really good value at around £50 a night.
In the past, they had a large and extensive menu offering fish, seafood, meat, gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options. Since they reopened this year they have thinned down their menu but there is still plenty of choices. They are well-known for serving local Flamborough seafood and wild game caught in North Yorkshire.
The North Star Inn serves breakfast to residents and non-residents, they have an A La Carte and Table D’hote menu and a snack menu (the snack menu is also available to take out and they have sandwiches at £5 etc.). They also have a special Sunday Lunch menu and they serve up one of the best Sunday lunches in the area. I will include their opening hours below.
We often opt for at least one of their daily specials as these usually include very fresh seafood or fish. Starters are priced from £4.50 up to £7.95 and you can choose from things like soup, prawn cocktail, deep-fried brie, mussels, garlic mushrooms and pate. My family all love their melon starter which even our seven-year-old has (minus the lemon liqueur drizzle).
I opted for their crab (locally sourced) cocktail which was delicious. It tasted so fresh and delicate.
With regards to main courses, they have fish dishes including traditional fish and chips, salmon dishes and specials. Prices start from £12 for meat dishes, we can recommend their homemade steak pie which is excellent, there is usually some game, a choice of steaks, lasagne and a chicken dish. Prices start from £11.
My husband and I chose the fish of the day which was monkfish and tiger prawns in garlic butter. It was excellent. You also get dishes full of potatoes and vegetables to go with your main meal. We aren’t fans of their boiled potato but if someone has steak or your kids have chips you get a nice big bowl to share. My mother-in-law opted for their Ploughmans which was packed full of wonderful things to eat.
As mentioned above there are options for gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan. There isn’t much choice for dietary requirements on the menu at the moment so you may have to ask. We are pescatarians trying to be vegetarian so I will enquire next time we are there and update accordingly.
The kid’s meals are excellent value for money at £5.50. The portions are huge and they share your side dishes if their meals come with your main meals. There is always a massive bowl of chips. Our son alternates between the haddock in batter, chicken nuggets and sausages.
On this occasion, we didn’t have a dessert from the trolley. We can, however, highly recommend and I will add more information at a later date. I hope if you visit you will enjoy their fresh home-cooked food as much as we do. It makes a change to some of the local restaurants.
