Brading Roman Villa

Brading Roman Villa

Brading Roman Villa was one of the finest Roman sites in the UK. Today you can see some of the remains which were excavated and put on display. This can be found in Brading overlooking Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight.

What is there to do at Brading Roman Villa?

The site was first discovered in 1879 by a farmer who struck a buried mosaic floor while making holes in his land for a sheep pen. The excavated remains are now undercover in an Exhibition and visitor centre. All 12 of the ground floor rooms survived, although their original use is unclear. The museum preserves the West Range which was built around AD300. The foundations of earlier ranges are outlined in chalk outside.

The museum offers a unique insight into Roman life from beautifully preserved mosaic floors to an extensive collection of Roman archaeology. They often run extra activities for families such as mosaic making and shield decorating. You can also borrow Roman-style games to play within the grounds.
