The People's Story Museum

Museum Overview

The People’s Story Museum is located in the Canongate Tollbooth in Edinburgh, Scotland. It explores the lives of the people of Edinburgh from the late 18th century to present-day times. There are a number of displays with original objects, images and a variety of stories told to reveal the fascinating history of the city. The collection focuses on the history, culture and trades plus more contemporary issues.

The museum displays have a vintage feel, re-creating scenes of daily life. Displays include a bookbinder’s workshop, a wartime kitchen, a tea room and a jail cell. It first opened in 1989 and is housed in a building dating from 1591 which was once used as a prison. There are three floors to explore including some large life-size waxworks.

It is one of the most visually attractive and experiential museums in Edinburgh. It is not often that you get the chance to walk into a war-period kitchen or bookbinders from the 19th century.
