Tunnels Beaches
Tunnels Beaches are just two of a number of beautiful beaches, which can be found in the north Devon town of Ilfracombe.
What is there to do at Tunnels Beaches?
In the 1820s four tunnels were hewn through the rock by hand. The tunnels gave access to two otherwise inaccessible coves and Tunnel beaches, were created.
The coves have cliff backdrops which means they’re sheltered, unlike other beaches, along this stretch of craggy coastline. A large tidal bathing pool sits next to the beach set from the sea by a large wall of towering rocks. The beaches are an ideal spot for family beach days despite being made up of shingle with no sand.
Ladies Beach has a tidal pool which is visible three hours before and after low tide, so check tide times. Gentleman’s Beach is home to a contemporary wedding venue and is closed when a wedding is in progress. Although an entry fee is charged to gain access to the beaches, it’s worth the money if you’re going to spend at least half a day on the beach.
