Smugglers Adventure
Smugglers Adventure, otherwise known as St Clements Cave, is located on West Hill in Hastings, Sussex. Since 1989 they have been home to the Smugglers Adventure tourist attraction which tells the story of smuggling on the South Coast of England around 200 years ago.
Over the years the caves have had many uses including a home, a hospital, a ballroom and an air raid shelter. The caves were formed around 14,000 BC during the last known Ice Age. The caves are steeped in so much history that no one is sure how long they have been used. The caves are the perfect location for showing a vivid recreation of the stories connected to smuggling and piracy. It is an underground network of ancient caves and caverns filled with secret tunnels that were once used by smugglers.
They have atmospheric lighting and lots of life-like sculptures that bring the experience to life. There are over 70 characters plus interactive displays, hands-on games and activities. The Chapel is the most haunted part of the caves and it is colder than anywhere else. Make sure you dress up warm!
It is an educational and exciting experience but some younger children and those with a nervous disposition may find some of the themes discussed scary, such as ghosts and mild gore/horror. It is a self-guided attraction and there are no members of staff dressed in costume trying to scare you, unless at an advertised special event.
