The Food Museum

The Food Museum

Museum Overview

The Food museum is the UK’s only museum dedicated to food and it is located in Stowmarket, Suffolk. Formerly the museum of East Anglian Life it specialises in presenting the agricultural history of the area through a mixture of exhibits and living history demonstrations.

There are 75 acres of Suffolk countryside to explore plus 40,000 objects and 17 buildings plus activities every day. Objects in their collection range from wartime ration recipes to a full-size steam-powered mill engine. It takes most people all day to visit and it’s worth knowing that parts of it can get muddy.

Make sure you pop by the museum shop for their list of daily talks, tours and demonstrations. These change every day! There are horses you can meet, you can have a go at hands-on farming and foraging activities and watch their animals feeding.

Highlights include a visit to Abbot’sHall which is original to the site. There is a picturesque walled garden, a farm area, a watermill and river trails. Their river sculpture trail is a beautiful place to enjoy a walk. They also host a number of annual events, including forest school, storytelling and toddler time.
