The Workhouse Southwell
The Workhouse in Southwell, Nottinghamshire is owned by the National Trust and it is the most complete workhouse still in existence. Also known as Greet House it has been open to the public since 2002.
What is there to do at The Workhouse?
Built in 1824 as a last resort refuge for the poor and destitute it is one of the best-preserved examples in the UK. You can explore the atmospheric workhouse buildings and the Firbeck Infirmary. Guided tours will help you to learn more about the history of the place.
A visit can start with their 11 am volunteer-led welcome tour where you can see some of the outside areas not usually seen by the public. Or you can pick up a digital device to take around with you which tells the story at certain points of how past inmates were treated. The Firbeck Infirmary has been recreated to show how it may have looked in the 1870s and also as a later 1970s care ward. There are also exhibition boards about Florence Nightingale.
Outdoors there is a kitchen garden where you can see where Workhouse inmates would have once-grown food. They also run a number of additional activities for families, mostly during the school holidays. There is usually a trail for children and games plus an area to dress up in specially recreated costumes.
