Downpatrick and County Down Railway

The Downpatrick and County Down Railway is a 5-foot 3-inch gauge heritage railway located in Downpatrick, County Down. It is operated by a team of volunteers and they run passenger trains using steam and diesel locomotives. They are Ireland’s only full-size heritage railway.

Their train trips take 10 minutes but that isn’t all you can do as there are other things to see and explore around their stations and museum. Their station in Downpatrick is located below St Patrick’s Cathedral which makes for a lovely backdrop for departing trains.

You can drive a train on the model railway visit the museum and explore their carriage gallery. On the train journey, you can enjoy views of the Mourne mountains and the local countryside. The other station is at Inch Abbey which you can enjoy a walk to before your return journey.

The museum at Downpatrick houses a collection of relics that tell the story of the Irish railways. In the carriage gallery, there is a collection of old carriages and locomotives. You can also play games, watch films and the kids can dress up.
