Down County Museum
Museum Overview
Down County Museum is located in the centre of Downpatrick, County Down. It is located inside an 18th-century former prison and its exhibits are dedicated to local history.
It houses fascinating exhibitions as well as restored cells with life-size figures of prisoners and their gaolers. Visitors can explore the history of the old Gaol and explore their permanent and temporary exhibitions. Their permanent exhibition Down through Time takes you on a journey through 9,000 years of history. There are over 1,100 objects on display.
The Gaol was first opened in 1796 and closed in 1830. It housed many thousands of prisoners. Today you can see the conditions in which the prisoners were kept, stroll through the goal courtyards and learn more about individual prisoners that were once held here. They also host a number of annual events including family days, living history events, seasonal events, craft workshops and demonstrations.
