World of Glass

World of Glass

World of Glass is a museum and visitor centre located in St Helens, Merseyside. It is dedicated to the local history of the town and the surrounding area, especially the glass industry.

What is there to do at the World of Glass?

You can discover the story of what made St Helen’s great from its beginnings to its rise as a world leader in Glass making. The Glass Roots Galleries explore the history of glass with artefacts dating back to Ancient Egypt. They have glass from all around the world across many centuries on display.

Another gallery is their Earth into light Gallery. This tells the story of glass making in St Helen’s including being able to find out what life was like in a Victorian town. They also run daily glassblowing demonstrations plus there is a three-screen film show.

On-site you can explore underground tunnels of one of the world’s first continuous regenerative tank glass-making furnace that was built in 1887. It has been classified as the best-surviving example in England by English Heritage. The final gallery has a breathtaking chandelier from Manchester airport. There are plans for a playground.
