Jane Austens House

Jane Austen’s House is a small independent museum located in the village of Chawton near Alton in Hampshire. This inspiring cottage was once the home of the famous author Jane Austen.

Things to see at Jane Austen’s House

While living at the cottage she wrote her six beloved novels and today the museum celebrates her life, works and legacy. She lived in the cottage for the last eight years of her life and today you can see an unparalleled collection of her treasures including furniture, paintings and household objects.

You can see personal letters and first editions of her novels plus cherished items of jewellery. They even have on display the tiny writing table at which she wrote. There are a number of rooms to explore including the sunny Drawing room, the vibrant green Dining Room and the cosy bedroom that it is believed she shared with her sister Cassandra. They have done their best to return the rooms to their historic layout.

Immersive audio and subtle historic scents throughout the house evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era. Across the courtyard in the historic bakehouse families can enjoy a range of hands-on activities including Regency letter writing, miniature portrait drawing, bonnet designing and dressing up. You can also explore the pretty cottage garden.
