Hartland Abbey
Hartland Abbey is a former abbey and current family home located in Hartland, Devon. It is open to the public and it has been a popular film location located in a picturesque valley.
What can you do at Hartland Abbey?
You can explore the award-winning house and its interiors. The abbey was originally built in the 12th Century and it survived as a monastery longer than any other in the country. In 1539 Henry VIII gifted the abbey to the keeper of his wine cellar and the house still remains in the family.
Visitors can enjoy the restored gardens including an 18th-century walled garden, a summerhouse, a gazebo and a beach with views of Lundy Island. There are up to 3.5 miles of walks to enjoy. Peacocks, donkeys and black sheep live out in the parkland and there are plenty of open spaces for children to explore.
They usually have some child-friendly trails to pick up and enjoy and there is usually an exhibition. Kids may be particularly interested in their Malory Towers trail that takes you around the film locations of the house and outdoors. Series 1-3 were filmed here.
