Wordsworth House and Garden

Wordsworth House and Garden

Wordsworth House and Garden is a National Trust property located in Cockermouth in Cumbria. In the house, you can step back in time to the 1770s when it was William Wordsworth’s childhood home.

It is a Georgian townhouse and a Grade I listed building. Today it is presented as it would have been when Wordsworth once lived here with his family. Outdoors there is an 18th-century garden to explore with a variety of vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. The River Derwent runs behind William’s beloved terrace walk.

You can take a guided tour around the house or an audio tour or explore the working kitchen and other rooms at your own pace. There are friendly and knowledgeable guides on hand to answer your questions and throughout the school holidays (when open) the maid-of-all-work is often cooking in the house. The children’s bedroom is set up with toys and dressing-up clothes. There are also daily children’s trails and down in the cellar, the household’s ghosts are waiting to tell their stories. There is a permanent exhibition and family games.
