Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle is managed by English Heritage and it is located in the centre of Carlisle in Cumbria. It is a medieval castle that has dominated the city for nine centuries and remained a working fortress until well within living memory.

The castle is located near the ruins of Hadrian’s Wall and was first built during the reign of William I, who was the son of William the Conqueror. It has been the site of many historical, episodes in British history and it has seen many wars and invasions. A museum is also located within the castle walls that you can include a visit to in your ticket.

You can explore the medieval castle rooms, discover its history via an exhibition and walk some of the castle walls. You can even visit Queen Mary’s Tower which is where Mary, Queen of Scots was held captive from 1568 by order of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. There is a suite of rooms which were once the bedroom of Richard III, now known as the Warden’s apartments. Plus you can also visit the Captain’s Tower which is one of the best-preserved gatehouses in the country.
