Verulamium Museum
Museum Overview
The Museum of Everyday Life in Roman Britain is located in St Albans, Hertfordshire. The Verulamium Museum was built on the site of one of the largest Roman cities in Britain and is filled with ancient treasures and some of the finest mosaics outside of the Mediterranean.
Visitors can immerse themselves in recreated Roman rooms and admire Roman craftsmanship. Verulamium contains a vast variety of artefacts including jewellery, pottery and the remains of Roman residents. It also houses recent discoveries such as the Sandridge Hoard, a collection of 159 Roman gold coins.
In addition, there are hands-on discovery areas for younger visitors, a selection of free activity sheets for children and dressing up clothes are available on weekends and school holidays. Another attraction in the local area is the Clock Tower: This is free, for children and £2 for adults:
A symbol of civic pride, St Albans’ Clock Tower is the only surviving medieval town belfry in England and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The people of St Albans built the tower, which was completed by 1405 as a symbol of their resistance against the power of the abbot of St Albans. The Tower allowed the town to sound its own hours and, until 1863, the curfew.
The Clock Tower’s bell rang out for the first Battle of St Albans during the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Today, the tower and its 600-year-old bell still stand face to face with the abbey’s tower and provide fantastic views across St Albans and far into the Hertfordshire countryside.
