Binchester Roman Fort

Binchester Roman Fort is located in Binchester close to Bishop Auckland in County Durham. The fort gives you an insight into what life was like for the Romans in County Durham. The fort was the site of a hamlet until the late Middle Ages and was most likely established around AD 79 to guard the crossing of the River Wear. At the time it was the largest Roman fort in County Durham.

Today you can explore the exceptionally well-preserved remains of two bath-houses. One lies inside the fort and has one of the most intact hypocaust (underfloor) heating systems in the UK. The other bathhouse lies outside the fort and is even better preserved with walls still standing of more than two metres.

You can find out why taking a bath in Roman times was about more than just getting clean. Plus you can walk in the footsteps of Roman soldiers within the remains of the commanding officer’s house and see if you can find the ‘Beast of Binchester’ among the ruins. The fort often hosts annual events.
