Tolquhon Castle

Tolquhon Castle

Tolquhon Castle is located close to Pitmedden in Aberdeenshire. The castle was built in the late 16th century by William Forbes and it was an extension of an earlier tower house known as Preston’s Tower.

It is said to be one of Grampian’s most picturesque castles and features many lavish details including fine carvings of its chief builder Sir William Forbes and his wife. The gatehouse is a real gem which was built to impress.

You can explore the family rooms and go ‘below stairs’ in the charming main house at the far end of the courtyard. There is a hiding place to find where Sir William hid his valuables and they have a fun fact-finding quiz to take around the castle with you. The main castle is mostly a ruin with no roof.
