The Great Laxey Wheel

The Great Laxey Wheel

The Great Laxey Wheel is the largest surviving waterwheel of its kind in the world. It is located near Laxey on the Isle of Mann and is open to visitors.

The wheel is known as the Lady Isabella served the mine for 70 years. It has since become the island’s most dramatic tourist attraction. The wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from the Laxey mines. Today you can climb to the top and enjoy some fantastic panoramic views across the Laxey Valley.

Beyond the wheel, you can take a one-hour tour to explore the mine and the trail to the mine ruins. There you will also learn more about the lives of the Laxey miners. The Manx Electric Railway runs nearby so it makes a good stop off. This might be too long a walk for some but no worries as there is a free, car park.
