German Military Underground Hospital

German Military Underground Hospital

The German Military Underground Hospital is located in Guernsey, the Channel Islands. It is the largest structural reminder of the German Occupation that existed in the Channel Islands.

The hospital has over 75,000 square feet of tunnels and they were constructed by forced workers. They were used by German occupying forces from 1940 and 1945 as a hospital and an ammunition store. The maze of tunnels is almost invisible from the surface except for the entrances. The vast concrete maze is built under a low hill in the heart of the Guernsey countryside.

The underground hospital has recently reopened after months of refurbishment work. The hospital was made out of solid rock by slave workers for the German forces. It was never finished but today it has a forbidding atmosphere and serves as a grim reminder of the conditions that the slave workers lived in and sadly many died during its construction.
