What is there to do at Abbey House Museum?
You can explore the galleries to find out what life was like in Leeds in Victorian times. You will be transported back to the 19th century where you can stroll the Victorian streets with shops, a pub and houses. The museum has a new exhibition every year that is inspired by a theme from the museum’s collection plus they run family-friendly events, throughout the year including days when there are costumed people wandering around the Victorian streets.
Their realistic street includes Stephen Harding Gate which is the 19th-century equivalent of a modern high street. You can explore the poorer residential district which looks at life and death in Victorian times. There are childhood galleries where you can see a fascinating range of toys, games and dolls. If you purchase some old-fashioned penny farthings from the vending machine you can play on their original penny slot machines.
If you want to extend your day out there is the nearby Kirkstall Abbey. Access to the abbey is free.
