Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is located in Beauchief near Sheffield in South Yorkshire. It is a unique 18th-century industrial work that is now open as a museum.
What can you do at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet?
You can see what life at home and at work would have been like for the workers. The works were once producers of agricultural tools and they were the largest water-powered industrial site on the River Sheaf. The site is now Grade I and Grade II listed and a scheduled ancient monument.
You can see and explore the Manager’s house, worker’s cottages, waterwheels and workshops. Plus the steam engine, the last complete surviving crucible steel furnace in the UK and more. The hamlet has been restored following a £1million Heritage Lottery Funded restoration project that was completed in 2016.
The Works is an interactive area where you can get hands-on learning more about the history of the site. They also have an Abbeydale Explorer app that is your multimedia guide to the hamlet with videos, maps and trails. You should also be able to see live demonstrations.
