Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland, and a castle has stood here since 1096, though it has been remodelled several times. In fact, the current duke and his family still live in a part of the castle, making it the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle.

It formed a vital part of the northern stronghold against Scottish invaders for many years, and so over the centuries became heavily fortified. It still stands as an amazing example of a mediaeval building, as it is remarkably intact.

What is there to do at Alnwick Castle?

It is best known as a shooting location for the Harry Potter series of films. There is usually a daily broomstick training workshop which is for people of all ages to learn how to ride a broomstick. Many of the exterior and interior scenes of the fictional Hogwarts were filmed using Alnwick castle scenery. And it attracts thousands of visitors a year due to this fact alone, which can also make it very busy.

The perimeter towers of the castle host archaeological exhibitions. The Dukes of Northumberland has long held an interest in history and archaeology, and there are exhibits from Pompeii, Ancient Egypt and ancient Rome. There is an Artisans Courtyard where you can see how craftsmen make the tools and equipment needed using their fascinating artistic techniques.

The main part of the castle is open to the public. Here you can see the stately home of the Duchy of Northumberland, and tour its staterooms and artworks. As you would expect, it is richly furnished with grand decor and wonderful tapestries.

However, just as interesting is the land surrounding the castle. As was the fashion of the day, this park was artificially landscaped in the 18th century to resemble rolling pastoral fields. And this was done by the most famous landscaper of the age, Capability Brown. Finally, as you can expect, Alnwick Castle has a gift shop and cafe. And plenty of wide-open space within its wall. It is a lovely place for a great day out.
