Arbeia Roman Fort
Arbeia Roman Fort is the ruin of what was once a large Roman Fort in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. It has been excavated and partially reconstructed.
What is there to do at Arbeia Roman Fort?
The fort once guarded the main sea route to Hadrian’s wall and it was a key military supply base. At one time it was home to 600 Roman troops and it is said to be the birthplace of the Northumbrian King Oswin. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
On-site there are some of the finest full-scale Roman reconstructions in the country which showcase some of the most significant finds of the time. You can step into the fort and immerse yourselves in the world of Romans.
You can explore the full-scale reconstructed buildings which include the West Gate, Commanding Officer’s house and a soldier’s barrack block. There is also one of the finest collections of finds from Roman Britain that have all been found in and around Arbeia. They often host events, and displays including gladiator battles, falconry displays, storytelling and Roman re-enactments which bring Arbeia back to life.

There is no on-site cafe, Sometimes they have a popup cafe in the summer months. You are welcome to picnic outdoors.
