Auchindrain Township Open Air Museum

Auchindrain Township Open Air Museum

Auchindrain is an open-air museum located in Auchindrain near Inveraray, Argyll and Bute. The history of Auchindrain Township dates back over 1,000 years.

There are 22 buildings that form the museum and it is the only township to survive substantially unaltered from among the many hundreds that existed across the Scottish Highlands. Twelve of the buildings are mainly complete although the other ten need or are undergoing restoration work. Some buildings were damaged during an earthquake in November ’21, although they are now open again.

The township is first found in documentary references from the early 16th century. At this time the settlement was clearly established. As you step back in time at the township you will be able to imagine what life was like back then in the Highlands. You can see objects from everyday life and learn about the past inhabitants.
