Basing House Hampshire

Basing House Hampshire

Basing House was a Tudor Palace and Castle located in the village of Old Basing, Hampshire. Its size and opulence once rivalled Hampton Court Palace. Today only parts of the basement plus earthworks and foundations remain due to its suffering at the hands of Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War.

Things to do at Basing House Hampshire

The ruins and grounds are of national importance and a visit starts in the visitor centre where you can see displays introducing the house and its long, fascinating history. The ruins are set in extensive grounds which are great to explore.

You can step inside the battle-scarred Great Barn which dates from 1536 and visit the Jacobean walled garden and the Basing House museum. In the museum, there are artefacts which were found on the site and more information on the story of the house.

From a platform, you can enjoy magnificent views of Basingstoke and overlook the ruins. There is a Basing Mouse activity trail for children and they also run a programme of events, including activity days and outdoor theatre.

The house today is a collection of banks and ditches, cellars and broken walls with only the occasional surviving structure. When first built it was the largest private house in the country with around 360 rooms. The house was attacked on three occasions during the English Civil War and the third attack saw the set left as a burning ruin.
