Bath Abbey

Bath Abbey

Bath Abbey is a parish church of the Church of England and a former Benedictine monastery located in the centre of Bath, Somerset. Founded in the 7th century, it was reorganised in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries.

What is there to do at Bath Abbey?

There is plenty to see in the abbey including 635 wall memorials to commemorate people from the 1700s and 1800s and the floor has 891 flat gravestones. There are some spectacular stained-glass windows and vaulted ceilings and you can also join one of their Tower Tours.

On a Tower Tour, you will see the clock, bell chamber and views of the city from the top. There are 212 steps to climb and tours last for 45-60 minutes. Children can join in one of their tours with an adult from the age of 5. It is not suitable for those with poor mobility, claustrophobia, vertigo or ill health.

The Abbey also has a brand-new heritage centre. It is a custom-built area within the ancient vaults beneath the abbey building. There are fascinating videos, replica period costumes and exciting interactive exhibits. Plus there are historical artefacts, some of which have never been seen by the public before.
