Bodmin Jail

Bodmin Jail

The Bodmin Jail attraction is located in Bodmin, Cornwall. The jail was built in 1779 for King George III and it has played an important role in Cornwall’s history. The jail has seen a recent £8.5 million development and it is now a truly immersive visitor attraction. There is a brand new ‘dark walk’ experience and through the jail, you will step into history and take a journey back in time.

Things to do at Bodmin Jail

You will visit a number of areas of the jail and walk through the echoing corridors of the original Naval Wing where you can peek into grimy cells, learn about harsh punishments and learn what life was like for prisoners in the 19th century. There is a Governor’s office, Quartermaster’s store, condemned cell, the Final Walk, execution area and the original hanging pit. The ‘Dark Walk’ is the first of its kind in Cornwall and uses theatrical effects and the latest technology to transport visitors back to Cornwall’s murky past.

The walk is for ages 8+ (parental discretion) as the walk has very real effects, loud noises and more. The experience takes around 90 minutes and there are staff all the way to help and guide you with fast tracks at key sensitive points where areas can be bypassed. They also offer guided tours, paranormal tours and an after-dark experience. There is even a 4* hotel that you can stay at. Plus annual events, including Christmas and Halloween.
