Brownsea Island

Brownsea Island is the largest of the islands in Poole Harbour in Dorset and it is owned by the National Trust. The island is open to visitors between mid-March and late October.

A visit to the island starts with a ferry trip. Foot ferries depart from Poole Quay and Sandbanks. The crossing takes around 20 minutes from Poole Quay and it is a good idea to make yourselves aware of the first and last departure times. The island is a haven for red squirrels and is internationally important for overwintering and summer-nesting birds. There is a historic campsite on the island that was the birthplace of Scouting. Daily tours are offered on the island and are subject to availability. These are a great introduction to the island and booking is advised.

There is a natural play area with balance beams, a climbing frame, obstacles, a see-saw and a den building area. free, family trails are available from the Visitor Centre and the outdoor centre. You can visit the island via your own boat, kayak or paddleboard, you can land on the South Shore only.

Foot ferry prices cost just over £20 for non-members of the National Trust. Members pay around £13, children are around £12 and £7, family tickets are available.
