Bury St Edmunds Abbey
Bury St Edmunds Abbey and Abbey Gardens are owned by English Heritage. They are located in the centre of Bury-Saint-Edmunds in Suffolk. The abbey was once one of the richest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England.
What is there to do at Bury St Edmunds Abbey?
Today you can explore the extensive ruins of the abbey including the complete 14th-century Great Gate and the Norman Tower. There are relics of the martyred Anglo-Saxon king St Edmund whose remains were moved to this site in 903 and his shrine became a place of pilgrimage.
You can also explore the award-winning 14-acre gardens on the site of the abbey. It is internationally renowned for its colourful and attractive displays. According to VisitEngland the Abbey ruins and gardens are the 4th most visited free, attraction in England.
There is a children’s play area and tennis courts. Plus crazy golf from April to October at just £1.50 pp a game. You can also feed the wildlife near the dovecote.
