Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle in Caernarfon, North Wales is a medieval Royal fortress-palace that has been built on legends and bitter medieval conflict. The high walled castle stands next to a small harbour and the walls off the edge of the car park are a fantastic place for a spot of crabbing, it’s a great way to extend your visit.

What is there to do at Caernarfon Castle?

Although the castle looks intact from the outside many of its interior structure no longer survives although there is still plenty to see and explore. The castle took 47 years to build at a staggering cost of £25,000. Not much in today’s money but a fortune in the 14th century. The immense walls were designed to withstand the assault. Even the towers are unusual as instead of being circular they are polygon in shape, look out for some fabulous eagle statues.

In one of the towers there is a short film about the castle which is great at setting the scene. If you walk up some steps you then reach the outer walls and you can walk along the battlements. Here there are some fantastic views and it’s well worth the effort. The walls lead you eventually to a museum.

There is no photography permitted in the museum but it is larger than we expected and there’s plenty to see. This is the Regimental museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers. It is filled with medals, uniforms, weapons and historical displays.

Is there food and drink available?

There is no cafe on-site although they are currently building one plus a new toilet block.

What are the main things to do?

Imposing castle next to the water with battlements you can walk on and a Royal Welch Fusiliers museum . There are public toilets close by.

What are the ticket prices?

Free to members of Cadw Wales. An adult ticket costs just under £10 and £6 for a child aged 5-17. Under 5’s are free and other pricing options including family tickets are available.

Is there parking?

There is a large pay and display car park next to the castle.

When are they open?
